Black History Month: Honouring Our Communities, Sharing Our Stories

October is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the history, achievements and contributions of Black communities, while reflecting on the ongoing call for racial justice and equality. The Diocese of Southwark is marking the month with a range of services, events and resources that encourage learning, worship and community engagement.

This year's theme,"Honouring Our Communities & Sharing Our Stories," reminds us that Black history is not only shaped by well-known figures and historic moments, but also by the everyday acts of faith, service, leadership and compassion that enrich our churches and communities.

A highlight of the month is the annual Black History Month celebration at Southwark Cathedral, where parishes, schools, chaplaincies and Christian organisations from across the diocese are recognised for the positive difference they make in the lives of people from Black-led and Black-majority communities.

The diocese continues its commitment to racial justice through its Anti-Racism Charter, encouraging churches to challenge racism in all its forms and to build communities where everyone is valued, welcomed and able to flourish. New study resources have also been developed to help parishes explore these themes through scripture, reflection and discussion.

As a church community, Black History Month offers us an opportunity to listen, learn and give thanks for the rich diversity of God's people. Let us celebrate the gifts, experiences and faith of our Black brothers and sisters, and continue working together towards a Church and society that reflect God's justice, love and welcome for all.

How can you take part?
Throughout October, take time to attend a Black History Month event, explore the recommended resources, learn about the experiences of others, and pray for greater justice, unity and understanding in our communities. Together, let us celebrate our diversity and commit ourselves to building a church where everyone can belong and flourish.

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile... for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).
