Clapham Community Choir – BBC concert 13 December

Radio 3 Broadcast of this concert: see BBC Radio 3 schedule here; 9:40pm Thursday 15 January 2015

Clapham Community Choir is an enthusiastic choir of diverse voices, which over the last three years has been developing rapidly both in musical technique and repertoire. It is very much a “community choir”, of all ages from early twenties to seventies or so. There is a great range of musical experience within the choir, with a spirit of mutual support and cooperation. The choir takes pleasure in working together, learning and performing four-part pieces in a great variety of musical styles.

Jessie Maryon Davies

The concert on Saturday 13 December included a varied programme of traditional and modern songs, Vivaldi’s Gloria and music for Christmas there is a special premiere.

The choir, led by Jessie Maryon Davies, was selected in 2013 to take part in the Adopt a Composer scheme run by MakingMusicUK, which pairs amateur choirs, orchestras, and ensembles with a composer for a year to create a new piece of music for broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Jessie Maryon Davies graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2008 and performs both as a vocal and instrumental accompanist.

Mak Murtic

Mak Murtic is their composer under this scheme, and the piece he has composed for the choir is “Encounters”, a short, intense evocation of the emergence from icy chaos at the beginning of time.

With Mak Murtic’s jazz ensemble Mimika, the choir will perform “Encounters”, its first performance.

The concert was be held at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Narbonne Avenue, SW4 9JU on 13 December 2014.
