LENT—WHAT IS IT?
Lent is the
period of 40 days leading up to Holy Week & Easter.
The 40 days echo
the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness and the 40 years that the
Israelites spent in the desert.
Historically was
the time when new Christians prepared for their baptism by study, prayer and
fasting.
The 40 days of
Lent are a good time to think about who we are and what gives our lives
meaning.
GIVING UP?
Traditionally
people give things up for Lent: meat and alcohol, fats and sugars, chocolate
and crisps. The idea is to live a simple life and think about what we
really need.
TAKING UP?
Giving up is particularly useful if it
also helps us to take up: for example, giving up a
favourite TV show or computer game to make time to pray or study or help out.
Lent is ideal
time to take up something that will strengthen your faith: anything from
saying grace before meals to learning New Testament Greek (this might take
more than 40 days!).
We can also use
Lent as a time to find ways to help out more—in our families, neighbourhoods
and schools
Study, prayer and
service are all good areas to think about taking something up.
WHAT ARE WE DOING
FOR LENT?
We join with our
sister churches in Clapham for study groups and evening worship throughout
